About ASCIT Program

ASCIT Program History

The activities of ASCIT Program began when the South Carolina Access to Information Technology Project was established through a proviso in South Carolina’s Appropriations Bill in 2000, as a result of a request to state legislators from the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina who needed assistance in getting the Employment Security Commission to provide accessible computers for people who are blind.

Since 2000, the work of ASCIT Program has continued in a more informal network of state agencies, education institutions, disability organizations, and members of the private sector. Many trainings have been offered through the years, some in conjunction with other state training initiatives. ASCIT Program developed the SC Web Testers Program, now administered by Able South Carolina.

In February 2017, ASCIT Program leaders signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Able South Carolina that solidified official collaboration between ASCIT Program and Able SC.

ASCIT Program Mission

The ASCIT Program coordinates professional development opportunities related to digital accessibility led by our community of digital accessibility specialists.

ASCIT Program Vision

The ASCIT Program empowers South Carolina to be a leader on the frontier of digital accessibility and inclusivity.

ASCIT Program is here to help any organization through:

Training:  ASCIT Program provides direct training and acts as a clearinghouse for other training opportunities that come available online.

Consulting:  ASCIT Program coordinates a network of web-testers ready to access the accessibility and usability of your online content and offer technical insights on how to increase access.

Advocating:  ASCIT Program partners collaborate to further accessibility in South Carolina by developing materials that help others design universally accessible websites.
